Balıkesir University Has Achieved Institutional Accreditation for the First Time
Balıkesir University (BAÜN) has been awarded institutional accreditation for the first time under the Institutional Accreditation Programme (KAP) run by the Higher Education Quality Council (YÖKAK @ykalitekurulu). Thus, the quality-focused work carried out by Balıkesir University, particularly in the areas of education and teaching, research and development, contribution to society and governance, has now been officially recognised by YÖKAK.
Speaking following the successful completion of the institutional accreditation process, Balıkesir University Rector Prof. Dr. Yücel Oğurlu stated that intensive efforts had been underway for some time to institutionalise a culture of quality within the university, and expressed great pride in having successfully completed the evaluation process conducted by YÖKAK to achieve institutional accreditation for the first time. Rector Oğurlu: “Accreditation signifies the certification that the educational quality of a higher education programme complies with national and international standards set by independent bodies. This process demonstrates that the programme meets specific quality criteria in terms of teaching and learning, academic staff, infrastructure and continuous improvement mechanisms, whilst also enhancing the recognition and desirability of graduates’ qualifications. As an administration, we have carried out significant work across many areas over the past three years with the aim of making quality an integral part of our institutional culture.” “This significant achievement also demonstrates that a commitment to quality has been systematically embedded within our university’s academic and administrative structures. Together with our academic staff, administrative units and students, we take pride in having completed this process to the highest standards,” he said.
Acknowledgement of Contributors to the Quality Process
Rector Oğurlu emphasised that the quality initiatives carried out at the university are the result of a collective effort, and expressed his gratitude to the academic and administrative staff involved in the quality processes, as well as to all stakeholders.
BAÜN’s Institutional Accreditation Process
As part of the Institutional Accreditation Programme, following extensive preparatory work coordinated by the BAÜN Quality Coordination Unit, the YÖKAK Evaluation Team conducted comprehensive inspections at Balıkesir University in November 2025, carrying out both face-to-face site visits and document and evidence reviews.
During the site visits, in addition to meetings with the university’s senior management, academic and administrative units were examined, and discussions were held with both internal and external stakeholders. As a result of these evaluations, Balıkesir University’s work in the areas of education and teaching, research and development, contribution to society, leadership, governance and quality was certified with an institutional accreditation certificate.
